Internships & Graduate Students: Intern Program
Get involved in an organization where you can make a difference.
Interning at the DC Rape Crisis Center will be an invaluable experience, allowing you to work with people from many different backgrounds. You will gain work experience and an understanding about how small non-profit organizations operate. That said, we feel that our interns are able to describe their experiences here best. Here are a few quotes from recent interns:
"I feel this internship served to further my interest in my chosen career path. It confirmed my ideas about the nature of the job and what it takes." –Intern, Summer 2006
"Everyone was very kind, helpful and extremely grateful. Everyone played a big role in shaping this experience for me and it has been amazing." –Intern, Summer 2006
"I think that I was able to learn a lot, grow as a person, and give back all at the same time" –Intern, Summer 2006
The DC Rape Crisis Center is always in search of bright young interns interested in pursuing our mission to end sexual violence in our communities. It is only with the help of our interns, volunteers, and supporters that we are able to keep moving toward a world free from sexual violence. The Center seeks diversity in its interns and volunteers, and individuals of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, ages, classes, sexual orientations, and physical abilities are encouraged to become involved. In addition, all interns should be comfortable working with a diverse group of people and be open to learning about the issues of sexual violence. Interns should have good listening skills, as well as strong oral and written communication skills. The Center offers internships in the Counseling & Advocacy, Administration, and Community Education.
Counseling and Advocacy
Interns in Counseling and Advocacy are responsible for collecting service related counseling data and scheduling hotline shifts for the Center’s volunteers. Interns also work on a variety of projects, including updating our training materials, and referral guide, organizing events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April), and improving protocol procedures.
Administration/Development
In this department, interns have the opportunity research potential organizational donors, help with direct mailings, our annual auction, and phone-a-thons. Projects also include assisting the Internship Coordinator with the Intern Program, grant administration, planning for the annual auction, and database management.
Community Education
Primary responsibilities for interns in this area revolve around offering presentations to schools, businesses and other organizations about sexual assault. Interns also work with our teen groups, schedule speaking engagements, conduct presentations in elementary schools, plan Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and assist in doing outreach in the community.
